Katie Interview: Talks Laurel Lance’s Journey, Hope for More Black Siren

When it comes to playing a superhero on television there really is no better job. For Katie Cassidy, it was literally a dream come true to get to portray the iconic Black Canary on Arrow for four seasons.

While Laurel Lance met a tragic end last season on Arrow, her death was met with fan outrage and sadness at her character’s surprising end. But Laurel’s presence will forever live on in the hearts of the audience, the show, and in the actress herself.

“It was like a dream come true,” Cassidy told us of playing Black Canary. “It was such an honor to be asked to do that. The fact that the fans responded so well was such a big payoff. This part of my life is certainly something I’ll never forget. Black Canary will live on within me forever, and I’m grateful for every moment of it.”

But the beauty about the Arrowverse is that no one is really dead – unless sadly you’re Tommy Merlyn. With the universe expanding as it has with The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, there are different elements at play that make it possible for characters that we’ve lost to return. Arrow has flashbacks, The Flash introduced dopplegangers, and Legends of Tomorrow has the ability to travel to different time periods. Basically the possibilities are endless. As well are the possibilities of Cassidy’s return.

Cassidy was invited to The Flash last season to portray Laurel Lance’s Earth-2 doppleganger Black Siren in the show’s penultimate episode. The hour allowed Cassidy to explore her character is an entirely new way as she went from Black Canary the hero to Black Siren the villain. But who doesn’t love to play the villain?

“Playing the villain was so fun,” she said. “Obviously it’s a different show. The Flash is lighter. It was flattering to be asked to portray Laurel on Earth-2, Black Siren.”

With Black Siren being introduced on The Flash, it allowed Laurel’s doppleganger to have a supersonic scream – a real Canary Cry – given that on that Earth she is a metahuman. We got to see an entirely different side to the character as she partnered with the villainous Zoom.

But given the last we saw of Black Siren on The Flash she was locked away in the pipeline, there’s definitely a very real possibility we’ll see her character in the future.

“Hopefully we’ll get to see more of her,” Cassidy said.

In the Arrowverse, anything is possible.

Catching Up With Cybersmile Ambassador Katie Cassidy

We know that you are an actress, but you also have a blog ( that you started with your best friend – can you tell us a bit about that please?

We at TomboyKC are focussed on style that is, well, personal. It’s a place for the smart, opinionated, and occasionally sarcastic to join together to talk about the little things while celebrating our differences. We are self proclaimed nomads, and we aren’t travelling for work or buying 2 of everything, you’ll find Lynsey on her couch and myself at the gym, then us together on Lynsey’s couch. Usually reading up on current events, while eating pizza and drinking champagne in men’s pajamas.

What made you want to get involved with Cybersmile?

I was bullied in grade school and I had a really hard time dealing with it. Being bullied is something I can relate to. Today, I believe it is important that we educate our children how important their developing years are, so they understand the effects that cyberbullying can have. (Here is the announcement of Katie becoming an Official Cybersmile Ambassador in case you missed it!)

Do you think social media is a blessing or a curse?

I have a love/hate relationship with social media. Social media has done wonderful things for people. For example, a few months back, Stephen Amell and I learned that our dear friends son went missing 12 years ago. We were so sad in hearing this news we started feeding information about our friends son through our social media platforms. Because of social media, I’m happy to report that he’s reconnected with his boy!

Katie Cassidy On Laurel’s Future, Getting Back With Oliver, And The Grave.

And here is part three of interview with Katie, This one is about What’s coming up for Laurel and who is in the grave.

Katie Cassidy has been an essential part of Team Arrow since the earliest days of the show. Her Laurel Lance has not only dated the Arrow himself but she has risen to show off her own form of heroics and mentored her sister down a similar path.

CB: Do you think we might ever, before the show’s end, see Laurel and Oliver get back together?
KC: I don’t know. It’s television, anything can happen. I definitely think there’s space for it, and room for it, if that were to happen. I don’t know what would happen to Laurel and Felicity’s friendship. I don’t know. I have no idea. Again, it’s television, and if they decide to go for that, awesome.

During the Arrow/Flash crossover, when you were reading the script for that, this is probably a while back for you, but what was your thought when you got to the script page that just said, ‘And now everybody dies’?
I didn’t really … It’s funny because, I guess if we weren’t shooting … With the crossover, I was shooting episode 7, 8, 9 and 10, while we were shooting episode 7. So I was actually shooting scenes from four episodes, and so I knew, obviously, that that wasn’t the case. I wasn’t too worried about it. However, reading the crossover script, I remember reading it and just being like, oh my God, how the hell are we doing to do this? It’s huge.

Getting through it … I think everyone got sick during this, because it takes so much time and energy, and what we do, you can’t really explain it to anyone, you kind of have to be it. It’s definitely exhausting, but I have to say, 100% fulfilling and well worth it, because the fans love it so much, and obviously, we like to make them happy. It does make our job that much easier, to go in every day knowing that people are responding to it and loving it. We’re having so much fun, and the fact that people watch, and have so much fun watching it, it makes it all worth it. Having said that, we’re definitely excited when we get through it, and we’re back to our normal schedule.
We’re like, boom! I don’t know how we just did that, but now back to … It’s not as hectic, and not everyone’s sick and shooting four episodes all at once. It’s all good.

Speaking of that response from people, I’ll tell you something. Every time I talk to anybody who’s in movies, TV shows, I put out a call for questions on Twitter, and when I put out the call for questions with this interview, I think it was hands-down the biggest response I’ve ever seen. You guys definitely get that response.
Oh, really? That’s awesome. We have an amazing fan base. Most loyal, good fan base. They’re comic book fans, and, you know, respect. Awesome.

Agreed. Anyway! In the midseason premiere, Laurel found out about Quentin and Donna’s little romance. What are her thoughts on her father dating someone, let alone Donna Smoak, which, she does find out in tonight’s premiere?
I think she’s definitely caught off-guard when she sort of walks into it, when she’s not expecting it. I also, having said that, believe that she’s really happy for her father. As hard as it is to see your father with another woman, who isn’t your mother, I think that Laurel is mature enough to handle it, and strong enough to handle it, especially it being Felicity’s mother … Laurel loves Felicity, and they’re friends. I think that it’s kind of good for her. She’s going to see it for what it is, and be supportive of whatever makes her father happy.

Awesome. My two final questions here, what can you tease about the future of Laurel Lance’s story line? And do you know who’s in the grave?
Well, the thing that I thought was so great about this year, and continue to do so, is that we see Laurel a lot stronger, and along with fighting when she goes out there as The Black Canary, we see her more polished, we see her more … professional. She’s in training, and fighting. I feel as if she’s become a lot stronger emotionally as well. I think that continues to go that direction. I feel like she’s the backbone for a lot of these characters, and she tries to see the best in people, and she is a strong woman, and I love that. I think that we continue to see more of that. I think you’ll see someone come along who you don’t necessarily expect Laurel to embrace, and she does. Having said that, that’s all I can tell you.

There’s a lot of ups and downs. I don’t know what’s going to happen at the end of the season, but up to where we’re at, I think it’s cool to see somebody overcome so much, and go through such pain, and to come out the other end.

Cool, cool. And finally, does Katie Cassidy know who’s in the grave?
Katie does not know who’s in the grave, no.

Oh, wow! They keep you in the dark.
I don’t know!

Well, let’s hope it’s not you!
You know, it’s television, but I certainly hope it’s not me either.

Katie Cassidy 5 Things to Do Today

5 Things to Do Today got to sit down with Katie and ask her five questions

I’m so grateful for every opportunity, but I have to say Arrow has been quite the journey. We have a fantastic cast and crew, people who have become family to me and forever will be. We’ve had some amazing experiences I will never forget.

Time management continues to be a work in progress. I’m sorry the turn around on these questions wasn’t faster!!

To be honest, It’s really tough. I workout often, but giving your body days off is important as well as a clean diet.

I like my privacy, but sometimes my life can feel somewhat intruded upon.

It depends on the role. I usually like to spend a few weeks prepping, but some character developments require more time. It differs.

The night shoots. It tough when you don’t get off work until 5 or 6am, but I’m used to it by now.

Work hard pays off. Stay focused and believe in yourself. Never stop learning and developing your craft.

Katie Cassidy Describes Laurel’s Encouraging Goodbye To Sara has post part two of its interview with Katie, This time talking about her time on LOT and her goodbye to Sara.

On last night’s Legends of Tomorrow premiere, Laurel Lance had to once again part ways with her beloved sister Sara. Luckily for them both, Sara wasn’t dying this time around. Instead, she was heading off on a noble cause with the new Legends team to save the world.

“I don’t look at that scene between Laurel and Sara in Legends as a goodbye scene,” Cassidy explains. “I actually look at that scene as introducing her and supporting her into her next chapter of her life. I don’t look at it as a goodbye scene, I look at it as more of … It’s opening a whole new world for her, kind of sending her off and through … I look at it as a very positive, honest, opening a lot of doors for her, and supporting her and encouraging her.”

That’s where the White Canary costume comes in. It was time to get out of the darkness, like many Arrow characters are struggling to do, and see the light. “Sara introduces her, gives her the idea, and says, you know, ‘You don’t need to be all your dark things. You don’t need to be a dark person,'” Cassidy says. “She’s like, ‘I have a lot of darkness inside me as well,’ since her … that doesn’t make you who you are. You can do what Oliver’s done. You can be the light, and this hero that I know that you are. People look up to you, and you’re doing good. You need to embrace that, and then Laurel introduces the White Canary suit to Sara. As far as, ‘be the light’, is basically what she says. I look at it more of like, sort of presenting a new chapter in her life, and journey, and more of a positive thing.”

Arrow’s Katie Cassidy On Laurel’s Future & Sparring With Oliver

Last night, had the chance to speak with the Black Canary herself, Arrow actress Katie Cassidy, ahead of her Heroes & Villains Fan Fest appearance in New Jersey this weekend.

As Cassidy put it, Arrow has “an amazing fanbase. The most loyal, good fanbase.” A pretty big fanbase, too, I might add, which earned the show some solid ratings in its return. Nevertheless, we both agreed to respect the fan base and take a get a few of their questions answered before anything else.

Will we see her and Oliver sparring/training this season? Will we see Laurel as a lawyer again? Thank you! x
“Absolutely. You will have a chance to see Laurel and Oliver training together, and I hope that there will be more,” Cassidy says of Laurel and Oliver training together, “One of my favorite scenes, actually, I recently thought.”
As for the second half of Brooke Daviz’s question, Cassidy had another confirmation. “Yes to the other question,” she says. “There’s definitely more of both of them.”
So, more of Laurel and Oliver sparring ahead and back to the court rooms, as well!

Can she tease what’s next for #LaurelLance’s story line?
“Well, the thing that I thought was so great about this year, and continue to do so, is that we see Laurel a lot stronger, and along with fighting when she goes out there as the Black Canary, we see her more polished, we see her more … professional,” Cassidy says about Laurel’s future. “She’s in training, and fighting. I feel like she’s the backbone for a lot of these characters, and she tries to see the best in people, and she is a strong woman, and I love that. I think that we continue to see more of that. Katie Cassidy’s Delicious and Healthy Chicken Parmesan Recipe: Try It!

Delicious and nutritious! Arrow star Katie Cassidy shares one of her go-to simple dinner recipes with Us Weekly: a lighter twist on the Italian classic chicken Parmesan.

“It’s a quick and tasty meal that’s a healthy take on one of my favorites,” says the actress on the CW superhero show (Wednesdays, 8 p.m.), who is also the creator of the lifestyle blog Tomboy KC.

Healthy Chicken Parmesan

1 egg white
2 tbsp olive oil
2 large pieces boneless skinless organic chicken
1/2 cup almond meal
1 cup Parmesan cheese
1 package brown-rice fettuccine pasta
2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup mozzarella cheese

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk the egg white and olive oil. Brush the mixture over the chicken breasts.
2. In a small bowl, mix together the almond meal, ½ cup of the Parmesan cheese and pepper to taste. Roll the chicken into the dry mixture until it’s completely coated.

3. In a pan over medium heat, gently fry the coated chicken breasts until they’re golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes per side.
4. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 2 minutes. Strain while the pasta is still slightly hard.
5. Mix the pasta with the tomato sauce and separate into two parts. Place the first part in a casserole dish and top with ½ cup of the mozzarella cheese. Layer the remaining pasta on top. Place the chicken on top and layer on the remaining ½ cup Parmesan and ½ cup mozzarella.
6. Bake until the cheese starts to slightly brown, 10 to 12 minutes.

Pop Culture Principle Talks To Katie Cassidy

It would seem that The CW Network is a good luck charm for actress Katie Cassidy. She’s made appearances on series such as Gossip Girl and Melrose Place.

She became a household name as Ruby on the series Supernatural which is currently in its eleventh season.

Currently, she stars in the hit series Arrow as Laurel Lance/ Black Canary. Over the past several seasons, her character has been through a lot, but now she gets to join the fight with Team Arrow.

We sit down with Katie to talk about her character’s journey so far, what it was like to put on the Black Canary costume for the first time and her thoughts about a Birds of Prey team up.

Pop Culture Principle – Laurel Lance has definitely had her ups and downs in the sreies so far. As and actor, how have you enjoyed playing a character that has so many layers?.
Katie Cassidy – Honestly, it’s been everything and more. The way I work as an actor, I’ll do script analysis and come up with a backstory and try to make the script and character as legitimate as possible. The thing that is so brilliant about Laurel, the writers and our producers, is that only a part of me had to fill in the backstory. Laurel and her arc, journey and evolution into becoming the Black Canary to me was very legitimate. You didn’t’ see here wake up one day, jump out there in a suit and be a professional.

I feel like the character and myself as an actor, I feel like it was earned and it was honest and it was true. I was seriously going through training while Laurel was going through training when I wasn’t on set. I was waking up at five in the morning and seeing my trainer for an hour before I would go to set to work for fourteen hours or whatever it might be.

With how busy our schedule is, just knowing and staying focused, it was definitely hard work, but I believe hard work really pays off. It’s been a dream to be a part of such a wonderful production and story and to get to play this character; I couldn’t be happier.

How Does a TV Superhero Keep Fit? Arrow’s Katie Cassidy Shares Her Workout & Diet Secrets

Memorial Day is just around the corner and there’s not much time left to get your summer beach body ready. Luckily, we caught up with the stunning Katie Cassidy at the CW Upfronts Red Carpet event and she gave us the 411 on what it really takes to get in tip-top shape for the summer. From her workout regimen to her daily diet—here’s what the Arrow actress had to say.

“Workout wise, I always think it’s good to keep your body guessing,” Cassidy told InStyle. You won’t catch the 28-year-old doing the same routine over and over. She’s constantly mixing things up explaining, “I do spin—love it. I do yoga—love it. And I’m also into old-school weightlifting.” Cassidy skips the little 5 and 10 pound dumbbells and instead reaches for heavier weights. She added, “At my peak, I want to say I was lifting about 25 pounds for bicep curls.” She might have a small frame, but the star reminds us that she has to stay strong for her role on Arrow. She confessed,”I’m also in training for the show, so playing a superhero requires big muscles.”

Cassidy naturally complements her intense workouts with a balanced diet. “It’s a lot of protein, vegetables, greens and skipping the red meat. I’ve been like that for a very long time; it’s just a personal preference,” she says

Although Cassidy prefers to change up her workouts, she keeps her first meal of the day consistent saying, “I always do the same breakfast: smoked salmon, poached eggs, avocado, multi-grain toast, grapefruit juice, and coffee.” For lunch she says, “I try to do greens again, but then I’ll try to put some sort of protein on there.” And her dinner depends on the mood she’s in. “I do a lot of brown rice, pasta, or chicken, and then some sort of vegetable.”

As for her go-to snacks, “I love almonds and fruit. They’re both super good for you so, I’m always snacking on one or the other.”

Exercise and healthy eating aren’t Cassidy’s only concern for getting ready for the summer. She revealed to InStyle,”It’s important for me to also live a happy, healthy, and full life. Your energy, mind, and body totally connect.”

StyleR: The Bite with Trendsetter Katie Cassidy

StyleR: Katie, what kind of ‘Trendsetter’ would you categorize yourself as?
Katie: A Passionate Trendsetter.

Let’s talk about style when it comes to the characters you play on screen:
I think I’m very different in my every day/personal life than on screen (as far as style). Obviously, every character has a different type of style, a different look. It’s really important to me when creating a character, to have the right wardrobe and costume. It’s a part of my process. I’m very specific about that.

What about your style in everyday life:
I like having the attitude of not really caring what other people think and trying not to overthink and just being confident with what I’m wearing. Sometimes it’s terrible (laughs), we all make mistakes, but I like to look and feel effortless. But, if I think too much, that’s when I feel like I am having one of those bad days. For the most part, I like to mix something casual with something nice (example: ripped jeans with a blazer). It’s about what I’m feeling in the moment.
