Katie Talk’s About Financial Superpower Experience

People.co Five months after his death, Katie Cassidy is opening up about the loss of her father David Cassidy.

“Obviously, it’s been a tough year,” Katie, 31, told PEOPLE on Friday. “That’s a given. But if anything, I have to say, I always try and look for some sort of silver lining in situations like that — and I guess it’s nice that it really brought my family together.”

“Even though the loss of my father was hard, it really brought my uncles, myself and my brother back together,” added the Arrow star. “I think that’s the silver lining.”

The Partridge Family star died of organ failure on Nov. 21 at the age of 67. He had been in intensive care since he was hospitalized for liver and kidney failure the week prior. But according to Katie, his legacy lives in on in her day-to-day life.

“He left me with really great advice. He was like: ‘Don’t ever stop going to class. That’s where you should put your money,’ ” said Katie. “And that’s what I do, and I’ve been able to go from nothing to where I am today and it’s built confidence and self-esteem.”

It was Katie’s “hard work pays off” attitude that led her to partner with Capital One to launch the company’s Financial Superpower Experience tied to National Superhero Day on Saturday. The experience — a four-paged comic of high-tech posters, developed by animation and superhero industry veterans — aims to delve into the strengths, weaknesses, struggles and goals of financial management in a fun, interactive way.

While discussing the partnership at the Capital One Flagship in Manhattan’s Union Square, Katie — who grew up estranged from her father and was raised by her mother, former model Sherry Williams, and her stepfather, Richard Benedon — pointed out that many fans might not realize that her success is self-made. (As previously reported, Cassidy left $150,000 worth of assets to his only son, Beau, 27, and granted his music memorabilia to his three half-siblings. Katie was left out of the will, though it’s important to note that it was drafted in 2004 and the father-daughter duo had an up-and-down relationship.)

“I feel like there’s this preconceived notion that I come from a family of wealth and celebrity, the Cassidys, so I think people have this misconception of myself when the reality is that I actually didn’t grow up with my biological father,” she said. “I didn’t know him until I was in fourth grade, and then he became a good friend of mine. But I grew up with my mom and my stepdad and my sisters.”

The Flash “4×19 – Fury Rogue” HD Screen Captures

Last night was the first of this week’s double dose of Katie, As she made a guest appearance on 4×19 – Fury Rogue of The Flash as Siren-X the Earth X version of Laurel who is by far more evil and bad ass then Black Siren at this time, I do love that they gave her a new power to go with the Sonic scream it was a Sonic radar or something like that so she could hear and tell when things were being said or coming at her, I did not like that she look’s exactly the same as Black Siren right all the others on Earth X had different costumes so why not her. The other thing is how the hell are they going to explain why Laurel was killing people in central City with a power when Earth 2 Laurel is trying to pretend Laurel with no powers or killing people, I don’t think the writers thought that through very well. And we don’t no what happens to her as the last we see she was knocked out so maybe we will see more of her some time next season?. HD creen captures are now up in the gallery and if you click read more you can watch some of the videos.

Katie’s Bad Bridesmaid Experience

Fashionista While they may seem to lead exceptionally glamorous lives, celebrities and fashion editors willingly (or not) sign up for bridesmaid duty for their friends and families just like us. Their responsibilities may entail planning a classy shower and debauched bachelorette party, champagne-fueled wedding gown shopping, helping a the bride go to the bathroom on the big day (been there, twice) and, of course, wearing the mandated bridesmaid dress.

These days, bridesmaid dress options run the gamut of styles (and, thankfully, price points), but a wardrobe malfunctions, inclement weather-induced debacles and other sartorial disasters are still very possible. But hey, it all leads to a fun story to share, as model Shanina Shaik, “Arrow” actress and Tomboy KC co-founder Katie Cassidy, “Dynasty” costume designer Meredith Markworth-Pollack (who, fun fact, ended up recycling her friend’s Vera Wang wedding dress on “Reign”) and more fashion people, happily did below. They’ll all agree that the humorous-in-retrospect moment was worth it to celebrate a loved one’s special day. Well… most of them.

KATIE CASSIDY, ACTRESS, ‘ARROW,’ AND CO-FOUNDER, TOMBOY KC
“I was a bridesmaid at my sister’s wedding in Mexico. One of her best friends was reading this beautiful poem during the ceremony and it was so windy. The poor girl. Her whole dress flew up — it was almost like the Marilyn Monroe-effect — in the middle of the ceremony. She didn’t know how to stop it and it was really awkward, so I just ran up behind her and put my hands down and grabbed her legs, so she could get through without being exposed everyone. It was kind of chaotic but it was fun.”

TV Line Interview With Katie

TV Line It’s good to be a bit bad, Katie Cassidy has come to realize during her latest Arrow run, as Earth-Two’s Laurel Lance aka Black Siren.

“Looking back, from when we started the pilot to the end of Season 4, I took it so seriously,” she candidly shares of her original stint on the CW drama. But as the onetime Black Canary’s unpredictable doppelganger, Cassidy has let herself let loose, and the result she says has “been a blast.”

During our recent visit to the Arrow set, TVLine sat with Cassidy to talk about the vexing guessing game “Evil” Laurel has been playing with “dad” Quentin, survey her alliance with Ricardo Diaz and ponder the idea of total redemption for that minx of a meta.

TVLINE | In this midseason stretch of episodes, you’ve had more to sink your teeth into — whereas at the start, Evil Laurel was kind of, like, just looking fierce and stuff, strutting, sneering…
…screaming….

TVLINE | Do you feel like these more recent episodes have given you so much more to work with?
Oh, yeah. Absolutely. It’s so funny — I literally just spoke to [co-showrunner] Marc Guggenheim about this, because as an actor I want to continue to be challenged or grow, creatively, and that’s what’s these writers literally did for me, from Season 1 to the end of 4, and then I came back a bit for 5 and now it’s 6…. I’ve been really fortunate, so I love it. It’s almost like the devil’s playground, is how I think of it.

TVLINE | Now we get to see Laurel’s wheels turning. One scene that stuck with me was when she was holed up in the cabin with Quentin (played by Paul Blackthorne), sitting on the couch, and then at one point you almost “flip a switch” and snark, “Thea’s right, Daddy” — and you realize she was playing him the whole time.
Right, right, right. I know what you’re talking about. The thing that I think is interesting about this character is I do feel like there is room for redemption in some aspect. However, we don’t know what her life has been like on Earth-Two; we know bits and pieces, and that’s what I think is interesting about playing this character, how we keep finding out more and more information.

I’ve built a backstory off of script analysis and character breakdown, and while it doesn’t always match up, that’s part of the fun of it, just creating and being able to play — and these writers and producers certainly have been willing to do that with me. This is the stuff I thrive off of. I just love strong female characters in general, not necessarily because, “She’s evil” or “Oh, because she’s good.” Yes, of course it’s fun to play evil, but it’s simply fun to play any different characters.

TVLINE | It’s fun just to play complicated…
Exactly. And that’s what’s cool about Earth-Two Laurel — she’s kind of a loose cannon. You don’t really know what she’s going to do.

TVLINE | Every time we start to think, “Hmm, maybe Quentin was right, maybe he’s getting to her,” the rug gets pulled right out from under us. That said, do you think that maybe there is a half of a half of a seed of something good inside this Laurel, that can be cultivated?
As I said before, I do think there’s room for redemption — although maybe, personally, I’m just too forgiving of a person. If someone killed [someone else], you can’t forgive that kind of stuff here on our Earth, but definitely I think there’s room for redemption. I think she has a lot of explaining to do and understanding, and yet…. She’s kind of a wild animal. It’s almost like inside of her there’s this wild animal in a cage that wants to come out, and she wants to let it out, but also I think that she’s sort of torn internally, because I don’t think she was born this way. I think things happened to her that made her this way.
